Artist's Comments

While doing geography at school, I heard someone talking about Pippi Longstocking. 'Someone' said she finally knew the whole song of the Pippi Longstocking movie. When I came home I searched on Google for a picture of Pippi Longstocking's writer, Astrid Lindgren. Just curiosity. Suddenly I found an awesome photograph of Astrid Lindgren. She looked so natural on it, so beautiful. I decided to draw her.

I used a 4H, a 2B and a HB pencil to make this drawing. It took me over four hours to complete it.

I love it. You know I do. :blowkiss:

Can I see the original pic, though? I dunno, especially 'round the eyes, I feel there's something... weird. o.o But perhaps it's like that in the original picture, you see. Still. Your drawing ROCKS. :omg: They all do, by the way.

You meanie.

Thanks! :thanks:
I'll send you the picture over MSN Messenger, ok? And I know what you mean... I think I should have added more shadow around the right one. Maybe I'll do that later on. The shadows are a bit lighter on this one than on the real drawing. Mwa.
Thank you, again.
:iconmashedpotatoez:
Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking... I thought, perhaps you were afraid to use much shadow. Anyhow, I think you ought to darken the shadows around *both* the eyes, and at the hairline maybe.

Well, I was a bit afraid I would make the portrait to dark if I'd added more shade. This is actually my second portrait (I made another one at school with water colour and pencils) and it was just trying to make the skin equal and try abit shading. As I've said, I forgot to add some more shade to the right eye. The left eye is more shaded on the real picture. I'll make a new photo when I've added the shade to the right eye.
Thanks for your comment!

You're welcome. And it's reeeally pwitty. <3333

Great likeness. You really caught her distinctive features, especially eye shape and mouth expression. Shading is a little rough and textured and that seems deliberate, it's a texture that conveys her age at the time of the photo. The angle is unusual, was that intentional?

Yes, your right, it's a bit rough. I need to improve my shading and skin technics.
On the photograph I used as a reference, she's leaning against a wall. So, that declares the weird angle. Maybe I should have made a wall in the background so it wouldn't look so empty and it would explain the odd angle of this drawing.
:iconrobertsloan2:
Yes, that would help a lot. Her shadow on the wall would help define its angle and make it obvious that isn't a mistake. It looked more to me like some times that I got started on a portrait, it went very well, I was getting the likeness -- and then noticed I had the paper at an angle. Though sometimes when I did that I just tossed an oval mat over the drawing and changed its orientation.

I've altered the shading on her left cheek. I also made the shading on her right eye a bit darker (WIP 4 is the one I first posted as 'Astrid Lindgren'). But... I forgot to make some shade behind her so it would really look as if she's leaning to a wall... I'll do that another time. ;-)
